A taste of pork for Christmas

23 December 2005

The Australian pork industry has given more than 2,500 homeless and needy people a taste of pork for Christmas this year through a charitable donation of pork and ham to Mission Australia.

The donation consisting of boned and rolled pork roasts and premium quality hams will be distributed to homeless and disadvantaged people by Mission Australia through their services in Sydney and at their Christmas Lunch in the Park event in Perth on Christmas Day.

Australian Pork Limited (APL) CEO Andrew Spencer said despite the challenging year the industry had experienced in 2005, it was always gratifying to help those less fortunate and in need.

“This year the industry has faced uncertainty with quarantine changes and the continuing threat posed by subsidised imported pork products.

“Despite all this, we recognise there are people in the community who do without many of the things we take for granted at this time of year. A decent meal let alone a pork roast and ham are simple things many homeless and needy Australians will do without this Christmas. We are only too happy to provide some Christmas cheer for more than 2,500 of these people.

Mission Australia spokesperson, Paul Andrews said the charity was grateful to APL and the pork producers of Australia for continuing their long tradition of providing ham and pork for distribution among their clients on Christmas Day.

"Mission Australia will be feeding thousands of homeless, isolated and lonely individuals this Christmas and APL's donation is extremely important in helping our clients, particularly those in Perth and Sydney, enjoy the spirit of the season."

Mr Spencer also thanked Western Australian companies Dardenup Butchering Company and the Perth Pork Centre (Linley Valley Fresh) and New South Wales companies BE Campbell’s, Bush's Meats and Peter's Meats for sourcing the pork and ham products making up this year’s donation.
